The average American spends around 2,000 bucks a year for gas in their vehicle. Add in the aggravation of sitting in traffic — then searching endlessly for a spot that never materializes — and it makes one wonder why everyone isn’t looking for alternative transportation like the best 50cc scooters.

The time has never been better to make the switch. There are now thousands of affordable options for anyone looking to change up how they get around town. No longer is the scooter a mere plaything heard putting down the road from miles away. Now, thanks to innovations in batteries, sleek designs, and smart connectivity, modern electric scooters are changing the game.

WIth everything from Bluetooth technology, top speeds of 25 to 40 mph, and the ability to carry up to 300 pounds, these machines are making a serious splash. As if that wasn’t enough good news, in most states you don’t even need a license to operate one of these super fun machines on the road.

It’s Not Only About a Good Time

man in a scooter

As we mentioned, scooters are not only for a good time these days, nor are they just for kids anymore. With companies like Ford getting in on the action, electric scooters are making headlines around the globe. Find out about the best 50cc scooters right here.

How portable is an electric scooter?

Let’s talk about portability for a second. Right now, you are likely showing up to work after a long commute in heavy traffic, purchasing more gas, and looking for a parking spot. Your commute no longer has to be that difficult. With one of the best 50cc scooters, you can roll directly up to the door, fold your scooter or lock it to the bike rack, and walk it right into the office. There are even a few options on the list that are so light you can carry them right on the bus or subway.

Different scooters store and charge differently, we will discuss each of them in later sections.

Where can you buy an electric scooter?

Many of the options we are about to discuss are available through Amazon. A few of the scooters, though, are very new to the market which means they are still only available from the manufacturer. For each one we review, we will include the current information about where you can purchase each one.

Do you need a driver’s license?

In most states, as long as the scooter is 50cc or smaller, you won’t need a license to ride. Check in your state before you purchase your scooter. When you’re checking, keep in mind that sometimes the Department of Motor Vehicles calls scooters motorbikes or mopeds.

In the reviews, some people noted that because these are relatively new to the market, some police are confused. A few people report having been pulled over. There is a protip involved here. If you ride one of these machines, carry a printed copy of the law that covers your scooter specifically to help alleviate any confusion.

Are electric scooters difficult to assemble?

Most of the best 50cc scooters we reviewed come already assembled or with minimal assembly required. However, there are a few on the list where that is not the case at all. We will dig into the specifics for each scooter below.

For now, understand that a few of these come from China with very poor assembly instructions. However, there are instructions available online as well as ways around the issue. This bit of news, though, is a downside you should be aware of before you decide one way or another about a scooter of your own.

How does an electric scooter do on hills and rough terrain?

Remember, with the savings you get in gas, you will lose a little bit of power over a petrol powered engine. However, we did not include any on this list where the reviewers consistently talked about a serious lack of horsepower. You aren’t going to zoom up hills at high speeds, and expecting to do so will set you up for disappointment.

How Did We Come Up With This List?

Here’s how we came up with this list. First, we perused all the other lists of the best 50cc scooters, as well as trade publications. Then we compared and contrasted everyone else’s picks with what we learned from the reviews.

We spent hours reading every review about the scooters that made it to the final cut. A few of the scooters were on all the favorite lists, but the reviews were just too awful to include them on our final list.

Now, it’s time to get excited because you are about to learn about some remarkably cool machines that may help you transform your daily commute into something a little more enjoyable.

Now It’s Time to Talk About the Best 50cc Scooters

Buckle up, everyone, or in this case, strap into your helmet. We are going to discuss the best 50cc scooters. This list is not in a particular order.

[amazon box=”B07814C84G”]

The Stigo+ L1E rates especially high on many people’s lists. The Stigo is a great option if you are using the scooter as well as a bus or other form of public transportation. The reason for that is because the Stigo is super lightweight, and easily folds into a luggage size package on wheels. Its portability means you get to zoom right up to the bus, fold it in a matter of seconds, and pull it right on behind you.

The Stigo comes in two variations. One of the versions comes with a range of 15.5 miles, and the other, more expensive version comes with a range of 25 miles.

[amazon box=”B07FPT5WK3″]

Unlike the X-Cursion Elite New Version, Folding Electric Mountain Bicycle, most of the scooters on the lower end of the price scale didn’t make the cut. The X-Treme did, however, because the reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

Understand that since these scooters are relatively new to the market, some companies aren’t very good at mass producing them yet. What this means for the consumer is that if you are like me, for example, you probably need to look for a discounted scooter. Sometimes, along with those cuts of the price, you get an inconsistent product. When it comes to electric scooters especially, that seems to be the case.

The X-Cursion Elite was the one exception to that rule. Please note, however, that there are negative reviews about this product. Now and then pieces arrive broken or not at all. Out of all the discount scooters, though, this one was the favorite. The reviewers did agree that customer service was really on the ball and they fixed everything as quickly as they could.

Well, there you have it; the best 50cc scooters on the market in 2018. As far as staff picks go, the UJET is the overall winner. There is simply no comparison on the market for the technology or the price. However, if you aren’t rolling in enough dough to make that one happen, there are other excellent choices, as well.

For us, the Stigo and the URB-E are the top two picks. The URB-E makes servicing the scooter a breeze since the company is right here in the United States. Both of them are super lightweight and easy to carry and store.

Before you buy one of the best 50cc scooters, make sure you pay close attention to how much you weigh and how much the scooter you are looking at can handle. On top of that, record how many miles you travel to work, how rough the terrain is, and possible storage locations before you make your decision. Most of all, good luck and have a safe ride.

Do you have a super scooter that didn’t make this list of the best 50cc scooters? Tell us about it in the comments.
