Do you want to get from here to there without walking? Do you want to go to work without sitting in congested traffic? Or do you just want to have some fun? If so, the Segway ES2 may be just the product for you. We undertook a review of this popular electric scooter to see what it had to offer.

After looking at the Segway ES2’s price, availability and other features, we compared it to some similar competitors. We hope our review will help you decide if the Segway ES2 is the right electric scooter for your personal needs.

What Is the Segway ES2?

This Segway Ninebot ES2 is one of the most popular electric scooters on the market today. The scooter has front lights mounted high and rear lights on each side of the back platform. The lights operate with a simple power button that can be engaged once the scooter is on.

The scooter also features popular ground effect lighting with 16 LEDs on the bottom of the product. The LEDs are multicolored, and users can customize the color pattern. There are also a variety of frequency modes to choose from. Each mode has different patterns brightness, duration, etc.

Controlling the Segway Ninebot ES2

Controlling your Segway Ninebot ES2 is made easier by a display that shows your power mode, speed, battery life, and Bluetooth status. You can switch between three power modes while the power is on, and an icon on the display will confirm your current power mode.

The scooter’s ergonomic handlebars are comfortable during use. At your right and left thumb position you can control the throttle and brake. The design is appreciated by riders who take longer trips and do not want to bother with the lever-style brakes found on other scooters.

On the downside, the scooter has no horn, and the display can be hard to read in direct sunlight. Segway’s Ninebot ES2 also uses solid tires. Solid or airless tires are not uncommon on scooters, but they do not provide the same grip and suspension as air-filled tires. The tires are intended to be replaced when worn.

ES2 Construction

The Ninebot ES2 is constructed with a solid stem that latches with a pin. The latch system allows the scooter to fold for portability. The components of the scooter’s construction are sufficiently durable without being cumbersome and overly heavy.

Product Specs

The Segway Ninebot ES2 can travel up to 16 miles on a single charge of its 187 watt hour battery. Its top speed maxes out at 16 mph powered by a 300 watt motor. The scooter weighs 28 pounds and can serve riders weighing up to 220 pounds.

Pricing

During our review of the Segway ES2, we found the product selling for about $590. Compared to the competitors we reviewed, this represented the high end of the electric scooter price spectrum. The Goplus Electric Scooter was similarly priced at almost $600, while other scooters ranged from $300 to $400 in price.

We wanted to see if the Segway product was deserving of the higher price tag or if our readers may be better served by a Swagtron or Turboant product. Only you know your personal budget for investing in an electric scooter, but this review will help you better understand what is available in your price range.

Ease of Use [****]

The Segway ES2’s controls are user friendly. The thumb-style throttle is more popular among many owners than the trigger-style found on other scooters. It is especially useful on longer rides when riders’ trigger grip often tires. The correlating thumb-style brake is also a perk for longer rides on the Segway.

Push-button operation on most functions keeps things simple. Power mode, lights, and other controls are all within the range of a power button. Your button selection can be verified on the display screen.

Design Quality [***]

The Segway scooter features one thumb-style brake alongside a rear foot brake. The brakes operate quietly. The foot brake stops riders faster than the regenerative brake in the thumb area. The scooter is designed for a stable ride. The platform is 16 inches wide and subtly raises toward the front.

The solid tires can sometimes result in a jarring experience, and the more jarring a bump becomes, the louder the scooter responds.

The Segway battery is housed in the stem rather than the base of the scooter like some competitors. The Segway therefore has a wider stem than other scooters. The stem folds for portability and travel.

Warranty [***]

This scooter comes with a limited one-year warranty.

Pros

  • Stunning ground effect lights
  • Easy folding and portability
  • Sturdy construction

Cons

  • Battery is smaller than other similar scooters
  • Solid tires can make for a loud, rough ride

Conclusion

At the conclusion of our review, we gave the Segway ES2 a three-star rating. The scooter is durable and well made, but next to competitors with similar and cheaper prices, there are several options for buyers to choose from.

We liked the Segway’s 300-watt motor and easy folding design but other products go faster and fold just as easily. The Segway did have some unique qualities we really loved, including the customized ground effects and the reputation of a solid company.
